A whole house treated as one machine

Gabe designed waterproof rooms with ceiling sprinklers, sloped floors, drains, and warm-air drying. Cabinets could wash dishes in place; closets could clean and dry clothing.

The idea was radical, but its purpose was practical: reduce unpaid labor and make independent living easier for older and disabled people.

Her 1984 patent described the house as an integrated construction rather than a collection of unrelated gadgets. A fine spray or mist could apply water and detergent to walls, floors, and ceilings. A rinse cycle followed, excess water moved down sloped surfaces toward drains, and warm air dried the room.

The design extended beyond open rooms. Gabe imagined a dishwashing cabinet where dishes remained in their racks while being washed and clothing-cleaning arrangements built into the house. Plumbing, drainage, ventilation, waterproofing, and storage had to function as one environment.

She built the proof around herself

Gabe worked as a builder and repaired her own home while developing the system. She tested the concept at full scale rather than leaving it on paper.

She used her house in Newberg, Oregon, as the laboratory. That exposed weaknesses a drawing could hide: where water collected, which materials endured repeated washing, how warm air moved, and what ordinary objects had to be changed or protected.

The prototype made her proposal visible. “Self-cleaning” did not mean magic. It meant transferring repeated labor into architecture, mechanical controls, and carefully selected surfaces.

Gabe also framed the house as an accessibility project. She argued that older and disabled people should be able to maintain their homes with a few controls rather than depending on exhausting physical routines. The invention asked whether a building could preserve autonomy.

Decades, savings, and stubborn belief

Gabe invested years of work and personal resources in a system many people treated as fantasy. Her patent was granted in 1984 after a long development process.

Accounts describe 68 labor-saving mechanisms within the larger system. The number should not be read as 68 separately marketed products; it reflects the many functions involved when an entire home becomes a cleaning machine.

Commercial adoption presented obstacles the prototype could not solve alone. Retrofitting would be difficult, new construction required unfamiliar materials and coordinated trades, and buyers and lenders had to trust an unconventional system. A patent established her claim, but it did not create the network needed for broad use.

Those limitations do not make the project meaningless. Gabe demonstrated that the amount of housework society accepts as inevitable is partly a design choice.

Why her story belongs in cleaning history

Gabe reframed cleaning from a private burden into an architectural design question. Accessibility was not an afterthought; it was among the reasons to redesign the home itself.

Her work went further than adding one appliance. A washing machine still asks someone to sort, load, unload, and maintain it. Gabe’s house asked what would happen if the room itself performed more of the sequence.

The self-cleaning house remains provocative because it directs attention toward unpaid time, physical capacity, and independence. Whether or not her exact system becomes common, the question survives: why should a home demand so much repetitive care?
